What is the AssetLoom Network Scanner?

It is a command-line network scanner for agentless IT asset discovery. It discovers reachable devices, resolves available network identity, classifies the results, and exports a normalized inventory to local CSV or JSON files.

Is the network scanner really free?

Yes. The local scanner download is free to use and does not require a credit card. AssetLoom Cloud is a separate product for teams that want centralized asset operations and lifecycle management.

Do I need to install an agent on every device?

No. The scanner is agentless. Version 1.0.1 uses ICMP, ARP, selected TCP probes, reverse DNS, NetBIOS, and mDNS without installing software on the devices being discovered.

What types of devices can it discover?

It can find workstations, laptops, servers, virtual machines, printers, switches, routers, access points, phones, tablets, storage devices, and other IPv4-connected equipment. Classification depth depends on reachability and the network evidence each device exposes.

Does a local scan upload my data to AssetLoom Cloud?

No. Version 1.0.1 has no cloud integration. Scan results are written only to the local CSV or JSON output path you choose.

Can it inventory installed software and operating systems?

Not in version 1.0.1. The current release focuses on network discovery, identity evidence, open ports, and device classification. Credentialed hardware, operating-system, and software inventory belongs to a later scanner release.

Can it scan routed networks and VLANs?

It can scan configured ranges that are reachable from the scanner host. ARP is limited to the local Layer 2 network, while routed discovery uses supported IP protocols. Only scan networks you own or are explicitly authorized to assess.

Does it require administrator or root privileges?

Some discovery methods and operating systems require elevated privileges for raw packet access. The scanner reports capability limitations and can still use available methods when a privileged method is unavailable.
